Sichuan University (SCU) is one of the top 10 universities in China. It is a key comprehensive university under the direct supervision of MOE and part of Project 985 and Project 211. Set in 1896 as the earliest higher education institute in southwest China, Sichuan University lies in Chengdu, a famous historic and cultural city as well as "Gourmet Capital". SCU consists of three campuses covering an area of 470 hectares and enrolled more than 60,000 students including 1,024 from abroad.
West China School of Medicine in Sichuan University enjoys a very high reputation for its high quality of education and long history of medical education. It has been regarded as one of the top 5 medical schools in the country for more than half century. It originated from West China Union University which was established by western Christian groups in Chengdu in 1910. As the first western-style university in China and the cradle of Chinese dentistry, now it comprises 5 departments and a series teaching and research sections, institutions and labs such as The Chinese Cochrane Center, Tumor Biotherapy Research Center, Medical Genetic Lab, and Transplant Immune Lab etc. The Chinese Cochrane Center is the first in Asia and the 15th in the world as a member of the international Cochrane network.
West China School of Medicine has abundant teaching ability. It gathered an outstanding team of staff, including 1 state-level teaching master, CAS academician, 3 Changjiang Scholars, and more than 400 professor and associate professors. Among its 4 affiliated hospitals, the West China Hospital ranked the 2nd best hospital in China. As to the teaching and research, the school owns 1 State Laboratory, 2 key laboratory of Ministry of Education (MOE), 2 key disciplines of MOE, 2 disciplines with the national "211 Project", five key programs of Ministry of Health , 16 key disciplines and 25 key laboratories in provincial level respectively.
The school can offer all the teaching in English. In 2001, it recruited the first class of foreign medical students. Since then, it has enrolled 9 batches of medical students from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, USA, Canada, Korea, Fiji, Cameroon, etc, into the MBBS course. Four batches of them have graduated in July 2009 and 90% of them passed the medical licensing examinations. In 2007, it was licensed by Ministry of Education, China to enroll overseas students for the MBBS course in an English medium. Now about 350 international students from Pakistan, India, Africa and south Asia etc are studying in the medical school.
SCU is listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools and the graduates of MBBS program are eligible to take the Medical Licensing Examinations held by the medical councils in different countries such as MCI, PMDC, USMLE, HPCSA, SCHS etc.
Program Description
This program is comprised of 2 years of basic medical sciences, 3 years of clinical sciences training, and one year of internship.
Main Courses:
Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Diagnostics, Pathology, Diagnostic Radiology, Medical Psychology, Introduction to Surgery, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Dermatology, Psychiatrics, Nuclear Medicine, Medical Genetics, Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Research Design, Forensic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Geriatrics etc.
Internship:
The duration of internship is one year (at least 48 weeks). Students can choose to do the internship/training in China, their home country or any other country. If students want to do the internship in other country, SCU need to do a qualification evaluation on the hospital which student chooses.
For internship in China, the tuition fee is RMB 45,000, while for internship abroad; students only need to pay for the processing fee and examination fee. Degree Awarded:
MBBS degree: upon graduation, students need to pass the HSK 3 to get the diploma. On completing the requirements of the teaching program and passing the graduation examinations successfully, international medical undergraduates will be granted a graduation certificate and conferred a medical degree by the SCU, if they meet the degree regulations of the university. The English copy of the degree will state MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery).
Internship and Career
The duration of internship is one year (at least 48 weeks). Students can choose to do the internship/training in China, their home country or any other country.
If students want to do the internship in China, they need to pass the HSK 3 to contact with the patients. And the tuition fee is RMB 45,000 per year. The school will arrange it in the affiliated West China Hospital-which is one of the best hospitals in China. It is a superior large comprehensive teaching and researching hospital with over 4,300 beds for clinical internship and 20 labs are open for teaching. There are also 4 MRI, 4 Spiral CT, ECT, Electric Gastroentestinal endoscopy, Several kinds of Endoscopies, Radio Frequence Aberration, Linear Accelerator, Automated biochemical analyzer, Colour Doppler, advanced monitoring system for ICU, PRK, X knife stereotactic radio therapy, Cellular knife therapy series in the hospital which cost almost 5000 million RMB in total.
If students want to do the internship in other country, SCU need to do a qualification evaluation on the hospital which student chooses. And they only need to pay for the processing fee and examination fee.
Students have to take the final examination on Theory Test and Clinical Evaluation in SCU and they must have passed HSK 3 before graduation.
After obtaining MBBS Degree, the graduates can apply to take the medical licensing examination in the medical council in order to get registered and practice medicine. According to the regulations in different countries, the students may need to do the degree accreditation first. A MBBS degree holder can find jobs in government as well as private hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities. Except this, one can also start his own clinic or pursue study for master's degree.
Application Requirements and Materials
Entry Requirements:
1. The age of applicants must be between 18 and 35;
2. With an educational background equal to high school graduation in China or have passed Grade Twelve (10+2)/FSc./A Level/WAEC or equivalent.
3. With an average score of 70% and above in Mathematics, English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
Application Materials:
1. Notarized Health certificate
2. Photocopy of valid passport
3. Passport photo
4. A notarized copy of the highest academic credential (high school diploma)
5. Notarized copies of official academic transcripts
6. Two recommendation letters from their sponsoring organization or people
7 .English proficiency test certificate (For example, IELTS or TOEFL, only for applicant whose native language is not English)
How to Apply
CUCAS provides two kinds of application methods for international candidates to study English medium MBBS programs at China's universities. They can choose the quick and convenient online application system or the traditional offline application route-Apply via Email.
Online Application Procedures
To complete the online application process, you need to follow the four main sections below:
1. Click 'Apply Now' button on this page and login, if didn't have the account, register first.
2. Fill out the online application form with real and correct informaiton, including personal information, education background, language proficiency, etc.

3. Upload the required application materials
Please upload photocopies of required application materials according to the university's admissions criteria.
All the materials should be MS-Word (.doc), Adobe PDF (.pdf) documents, image files (.gif, .jpg), or compression files (.rar, .zip). Each file cannot exceed 8 MB (megabytes)
4. Make payment
CUCAS offers five types of payment methods. Please carefully select your preferred payment method and to make the payment.
Students who choose Western Union or Bank transfer as their payment method need to upload the payment receipt after you wire the money at the post office or bank.
5. Submit application
Please submit your application once the application fee is confirmed by CUCAS. To submit your application, please access My CUCAS-> My Applications by logging in CUCAS, click 'Continue' at 'Application Status' column, and go to the 'Submit Application' section. You will see a big 'Submit' button. Click the button and your application will be sent directly to the university.
Once you've submitted your application, please wait 2-4 weeks for the university to process your application. Once the university has made a decision, CUCAS will notify you by email. You can also track your application status by logging into your CUCAS account.
Offline Application Procedures
The steps for 'Apply via Email' are as follows:
1. Choose a MBBS program；
2. Click “Apply via Email” to download the fillable application form and documents;
3. Open forms in MS Word and fill in required information electronically, please make sure the information is accurate and correct to receive your JW 202 form;
4. Send us the completed form and other required application materials;
5. Pay the Application Fee and CUCAS Processing Fee, keep the receipt;
6. Send us the copy of receipt, and the school will process your application once receiving your bank receipt;
7. Check your application process via email periodically, and track with your admission status;
8. Wait for your admission notice from CUCAS within 5 workdays, and the JW 202 form will send to you in 2-6 weeks;
