Notice on the Merger of Several Famous Universities

In the 1990's, medical universities merged into nonmedical universities to create "comprehensive universities". Since then, some formerly free-standing and famous medical universities were involved with other universities to become an affiliated medical colleges or a campus. However, it made progress in areas of medical science in China, especially those mergers involving China's leading schools.

The following is a brief introduction to the merger situation of six famous medical universities:

Sichuan UniversityWest China University of Medical Sciences

In 1910, the West China Union University was established as a private university through the joint efforts of missionary organizations from the United States, Britain and Canada. The former West China University of Medical Science, with offered courses in stomatology, biomedicine, basic medicine and clinical medicine, had been a prestigious medical university in China that also enjoyed reputation abroad. In 2000, It merged with Sichuan University (founded in 1896) as a campus called West China Center of Medical Sciences, SCU. It is still one of the best medical academies in China and enjoys high prestige overseas.

Jilin UniversityNorman Bethune Medical University

Norman Bethune University of Medical Science was established in 1939 and was named after the outstanding Canadian thoracic surgeon, Norman Bethune because of his selfless devotion to the set-up and running of the institution more than half a century ago. It is an important base with considerable scale and academic ability of medical education and research, and has trained over forty thousand medical professionals and contributed a great deal to the development of medical science, medical education and public health. In 2000, It merged with Jilin University as present Norman Bethune College of Medicine of Jilin University. After the merger with Jilin University, much emphasis has been laid on the development of medical education, and the college has also been continuously involved in the development of the medical field in China as a whole.

Tongji UniversityTongji Medical University

Tongji Medical University is one of the medical institutions of higher learning under the Ministry of Public Health. It was initially founded by Doctor Bolon in Shanghai in 1907 as a German Medical School. In 1927, it was renamed the Medical College of National Tongji University. In 1951, it was moved from Shanghai to Wuhan and merged with the Medical College of Wuhan University. Then, it was named the Central-south Tongji Medical College. The Tongji Hospital, founded in Shanghai in 1900, and the Hankou Union Hospital, founded in 1866, were attached to Tongji College as teaching hospitals. In 1955, the college changed its name to Wuhan Medical College; and in 1985, it was officially named the present Tongji Medical University. In August 1996, the Public Health Ministry and Hubei Province decided to construct Tongji Medical University together, and Liyuan Hospital was affiliated as another teaching hospital. In January 1997, the University passed the evaluation of the State Educational Commission, together with the Public Health Ministry and Hubei Province that allowed funds for the key subjects of the "211 Project". In 2000, It merged with Huazhong University of Science and Technology as a campus called Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Central South UniversityXiangya Medical School

Xiangya Medical School is with 90 years of history and fine traditions of the school medical colleges. Central South University Xiangya School of Medicine, formerly specialized Xiangya Medical School. In 1914 it came from Hunan Institute of infertility group and the Yale-China Association of America co-founder, which was a founder of the older Western universities. For 90 years, it has changed its name to Xiangya Medical University, then Xiangya School of Medicine. And its scientific research institute occupies a significant and important academic status. There has been a saying like "China has Hunan Xiangya Medical School in south and Peking Union Medical College in north". It is not only highly respected in homeland, but also famous among international societies.

Sun Yat-sen UniversitySun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences

Zhongshan School of Medicine originated in 1957. It can be dated back to Boji Medical School founded in 1866 -- the oldest school of western medicine established in China. Thereafter, Boji Medical School consecutively merged and changed its name, and in 1985, it named Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences. In 2001, the former Sun Yat-sen University and the former Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science were amalgamated to form the new Sun Yat-sen University. And the Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU was found. Since then, our college had entered a brand-new phase of development. At present, Zhongshan School of Medicine keeps a leading edge in disciplinary development, scientific research, talents cultivating, laboratory scale and apparatus among its counterparts in China. It has become a renowned academic institute both at home and abroad for basic medical instruction, scientific research and technological development, with diverse branches of learning, superior infrastructure as well as abundant personnel in teaching and research.

Fudan UniversityShanghai Medical University

Located to the east of the prosperous region of Xujiahui, Shanghai Medical University was established in 1927 and the first state-run medical college at that time. The university has the top faculty and renowned professors home and abroad. As a result of China's on-going optimization of its educational system, Fudan University (established in 1905) and Shanghai Medical University merged in the April of 2000 to become a more comprehensive institution of higher education. On July 27, 2001, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University was established. Today, the College has twenty national key disciplines, one national key laboratory, and eight key disciplines to be further constructed in Project 211, nine key laboratories under the supervision of the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Health, two municipal key disciplines and eight Shanghai Clinic Medical Centers. It has four research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships, twenty-nine doctoral programs and thirty-six master programs.
